Can you be a Wiganer and not know Wigan Youth Zone? Of Course not! However, how many of you have had the opportunity to spend some time in their state of the art facilities in order to truly appreciate just some of the incredible things this local institution does for the young people of the borough?
On Friday, the team at Wigan Youth Zone invited local businesses to come round for a networking day with a twist and ‘Be a kid for the day’. We couldn’t think of anyone better qualified (by height alone) to masquerade as a youngster, so we sent our Marketing Manager, Chris Ellison, along to experience just what it’s like to be a young person at Wigan Youth Zone.
Chris has been to Wigan Youth Zone before, dropping off Christmas treats, delivering vehicles, or taking some handover photo’s. But, like many of us, he’s never really had the opportunity to spend much time there.
On Friday however, he fully embraced the opportunity to see and experience some of the day to day goings on at WYZ and it was a revelatory experience!
In the cavernous lobby area, he had the chance to get involved in a mini pool tournament, try his hand at some indoor archery and a few other activities. He regrets missing the chance to have a go at the massive indoor climbing wall, but maybe next time!
After a spot of lunch, the attendees were able to venture upstairs where there’s a range of facilities to cater to a wide spectrum of interests as well as some essential educational facilities too. Chris tried his hand at speed drumming (and won a set of drumsticks for his efforts), he toured the airy dance studio and even (with a bit of encouragement) had a go on the karaoke. Whether this was enough to stop him from being invited back remains to be seen.
Throughout the day, Chris was able to chat and enjoy some great activities with attendees from other businesses and the networking day served as a great icebreaker and a great way to relax at the end of, what for some would have been a long week.
There were other activities going on, including some great smelling cookery sessions involving melting marshmallows, as well as, on the more serious side of things, a demonstration of the education WYZ provide in relation to drugs, alcohol and sexual health.
All in all, the day was an absolute eye-opener, highlighting the impressive facilities WYZ has on hand and at the service of the borough’s young people. It was great to see, first hand what goes on and get a taste of how vital this incredible organisation is for the lives and life chances of so many youngsters.
As ever, we remain incredibly proud to do our bit to support this wonderful and worthy local institution.
