The MG4 EV is the first purpose built electric car from MG. Just released and already winning awards left right and centre, could this be something of a renaissance for this iconic marque? We think so, so we’ve bought a small fleet of them. If you’re looking for cheap electric car hire, look no further!
Those of us ‘of a certain vintage’ will remember when the MG badge appeared on a series of small, inexpensive, but massively entertaining sports cars, mostly from the 1960’s to the 1990’s, the sort that were fun to take on a weekend excursion to the lakes, or fling at twisty country roads in the summertime. The MG name has been around much longer though, dating back to the 1920’s, with the iconic octagon logo passing through a number of hands for the past 100 years. We’re not going to talk about those re-badged Rovers. Nope. Never.
So with the weight of so much motoring heritage, the current custodians of the MG brand have made something of a return to form by building a totally new EV platform from scratch and using it to create the first (of what will likely be many) affordable, spritely and entertainingly ‘chuckable’ cars, which will turn heads as you turn the wheels. Just don’t go dusting off your string backed driving gloves!
Sure, the MG4 EV is essentially a mid-sized hatchback, but we all remember what Ford did when they released the truly groundbreaking Focus, a car so good it went from no-where to everywhere more or less overnight. It won pretty much any award you can name, became an instant best seller and we’re so used to it now that it’s easy to forget just how bold the design was at the time. What we’re saying is that the ‘4’ could well be MG’s Focus.
From the outside, the MG4 EV isn’t bothering to try and blend in. That doesn’t matter because it’s a stunning looking car. With sleek, sculpted lines, a purposeful poise and assertive light array, the 4 doesn’t want to be ignored. We’ve gone for the range topping ‘Trophy’ version, so there’s a particularly eyecatching spoiler as well as some very bold colour options.
A mid-sized hatchback should be, at its core, a bit of an all-rounder. Big enough for a family to have as their only car without anyone getting cramped, but not so big that it’s unwieldy or expensive to run. It should manage a weekly big shop, be able to drop the seats for a tip-run, take you for a mountain biking day trip, or a family on a holiday for a fortnight. It should also be relatively cheap to run, to buy and to insure. The Focus succeeded because it was great at everything AND was supremely good to drive.
In this massively over-saturated market, we think the MG4 EV is an instant winner. Obviously it’s the right size and because it’s surprisingly inexpensive to buy, it’s cheap when it comes to electric car hire from us. Fun to drive thanks to the low centre of gravity found in most electric cars and capable of 0-60 in less than 8 seconds it’s embracing that classic MG heritage of putting a smile on your face for not much money.
At Westwood, we’ve selected the top of the range ‘Trophy’ long range version to add to our electric car hire fleet and with a maximum range of 370 miles and the capability to charge to 80% in about half an hour on a 150kw charger, this seems like the very first, truly usable electric car ‘for the masses’.
So what about the equipment then? Like all car technology, kit that was, at one point, only to be found on super premium, high end vehicles, immediately starts to trickle down to the kind of cars you and I drive. Would you expect a long range battery on an affordable car? 360 degree parking sensors and 360 degree parking cameras? Electrically adjustable driver’s seat? A 10.25″ high definition touchscreen? Wireless phone charging? Probably not, so we suspect the fact the MG4 has all that will surprise you!
Obviously we’re a car and van hire company and we’re wanting you hire an electric car from us, so you might take some of the above as mere marketing hyperbole, however, you might be more reassured by the following awards, given to the MG4 EV by those with less perceived bias…
At Westwood, we’ve been leading the ‘charge’ when it comes to electric car hire, so we’ve more experince than most when it comes to helping you find the best electric vehicle for you. Get in touch today and you could find yourself being amongst the first to drive this surprising electric hatchback. Naturally, as a Westwood car, it’ll always cost you less and give you more!
