Usually, when we jump online and start enthusing about a Caddy, Golf or a terrific driving experience, you’d assume that we were talking about our latest collection of brand new, heavily upgraded Volkswagens and usually you be right, but just this once, we’re posting about the actual game of Golf. (Although there was an upgraded VW involved – one of our liveried Transporter crew cabs!)
Last Weekend, our good friends at Wigan Youth Zone organised an incredible event – their annual Chariman’s Golf Day and in attendance were 120 club-swingers keen to practice their driving and putting in support of one of Wigan’s most recognisable community institutions.
We already have some keen Golfers on our team at Westwood, so we sent down our very own Jack, Andy and Jason as well as Ian Mather of Mather Transport to unleash their inner Arnold Plamer and participate in the day’s event.
Taking place nearby at Wigan Golf Course, our gang didn’t even have a fairway to travel to get a slice of golfing action!
Starting with a full English breakfast to start the day off the right way, our team headed to the golf course where they made good use of their morning to get their eye in at the practice range while waiting for their turn on the course. Jason also engaged in a bit of retail therapy and treated himself to a new golf bag.
A raffle was drawn as part of the Golf Day and some of our team were fortunate to have their tickets drawn. Andy won a Rugby Ball signed by the whole Wigan Warriors team and our very own Finance Director Laura, who didn’t attend but had bought a ticket managed to win a pass for 4 people to play a round of golf at a future date.
Despite the rather unpredictable weather on the day our intrepid team had a great time. Young Jack in particular played a cracking game, Andy…. ‘was there’ and it has to be said Jason spent so much time in a bunker he should have taken a bucket and spade! As ever though, it’s not the winning, it’s the taking part that counts and there was only one real winner on the day and that was Wigan Youth Zone!
With the proceeds from the day, WYZ managed to raise a colossal £7,000 all of which goes towards the various endeavors of this wonderful organisation and the terrific work they do improving the lives and life chances of young people across the borough.
