Electric vehicles could have green number plates fitted. This comes under new Government initiatives to promote the awareness of ULEVs (ultra low emission vehicles). In addition, green number plates may help support local incentives for driving electric vehicles. For example, enabling access to bus or low emission vehicle lanes, ultra low emission zones and electric charging bays. Meanwhile, green plates are already used by Canada, China and Norway. The Department for Transportation will be consulting the use of green plates for ULEVs moving forward.
Subsequently, it could see their use on UK vehicles in next few years.
“The UK has a proud history of leading the world in technological advances. That’s no different for ultra-low emission vehicles, where we are at the forefront of innovation and testing. “This new cleaner, greener transport has potential to bring with it cleaner air, a better environment and stronger economies for countries around the world. “Adding a green badge of honour to these new clean vehicles is a brilliant way of helping increase awareness of their growing popularity in the UK. It might just encourage people to think about how one could fit into their own travel routine.” Transport Secretary, Chris Grayling
In light of the UK holding the World’s very first Zero Emission Vehicle Summit, nations from all over the globe will be agreeing to support the development and implementation of green vehicles. Theresa May will be delivering an address at the summit, which is taking place in Birmingham and Buckinghamshire this week.
“We support efforts to increase awareness of the numbers of clean vehicles on our roads. Simple changes based on behavioural science can have a big impact. “Green plates would be more noticeable to road users. This increased attraction can help normalise the idea of clean vehicles. It also highlights the changing social norms around vehicle ownership.” Elisabeth Costa, director at The Behavioural Insights Team
The consultation will consider potential designs for the plates. It may include entirely green on the front, back or both sides of the vehicle, or a green symbol. The summit pledges collective action towards zero emission journeys. It also showcases that the UK is one of the best places in the world for zero-emission innovation.
