Audi E-Tron 50 Quattro – Audi’s Most Accessible Electric SUV
The Audi E-Tron was the German Marque’s shot across the bows of Jaguar’s incredible I-Pace, an all electric SUV that won the coveted car of the year award last year and, it has to be said, has been a winner amongst our electric car hire customers. The latest version of Audi’s challenger is the Audi E-Tron 50 Quattro. A large, luxurious SUV, which is everything a big Audi should be. Which just happens to be electric. This subtle distinction is what makes it look like Audi are onto a winner with their E-Tron. Many EV’s on the market today look very different from their fossil burning counterparts. What Jaguar did well with the I-Pace was to make it look like a regular (admittedly beautiful) car. The Audi E-Tron 50 Quattro does exactly the same. It just looks and feels like a regular big Audi – large, luxurious and well engineered, giving almost no hints that it runs on bottled lightening, not recycled dinosaurs! You don’t drive a big comfortable Audi to burn rubber at the traffic lights, but even so, as an electric car, it has lots of immediate and sustained power beneath your right foot and at around 7 seconds to 60 mph, it pulls surprisingly well for a car weighing in at over 2 and a half tons. Similarly, the sure-footedness inherent in the majority of EV’s is just as prevalent here. With much of the weight being tied up in the battery, which is located in the floor of the car, the centre of gravity is low down and evenly distributed between all the wheels, giving the electric Audi a reassuring poise and balance. In summary, the E-Tron 50 is an electric car targetted perfectly to attract drivers away from their conventional vehicles, by being the best of both worlds. It looks like a ‘regular’ car rather than being identifiably electric, but a regualr car by Audi standards, which is perfectly engineered, comfortable and luxurious. If the I-Pace is a car that made the electric car more mainstream, the Audi E-Tron is the car that IS a mainstream electric car.
