You’ll have heard of Euro 6, but you might not know exactly what it is or how much it’ll cost you.
Euro 6 is the name of emissions standards that came out a couple of years ago, to make new cars and vans cleaner. It’s all about how much pollution you can emit, with diesel engines getting it the hardest.
New diesel engines now have to be over 50% cleaner, although petrol engines have got it away with it and aren’t affected.
But why is this so important now?
Because you might start feeling the pinch in your pocket from the 8th of April this year. Unless, that is, you upgrade your wheels with van hire or purchase from Westwood Motor Group.
What Happened on the 8th of April 2019 Got Bigger on The 25th of October 2021!
The 8th of April, 2019, was when London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) came into play and a few years later, on the 25th of October 2021, the ULEZ was expanded to cover pretty much the same area as the congestion charge – an area 18 times larger, incorporating all of London within the M25.
The ULEZ means if you ever drive in London, you have to pay a daily emissions charge on top of the congestion charge. Unlike the congestion charge though, it doesn’t take a break, being active 24/7, 365 days a year.
But even if you don’t ever go to London, Euro 6 could still sting you.
Get Smart and Save A Fortune!
You’ll certainly feel the pinch if you own a van that isn’t Euro 6 compliant or a car that isn’t at least Euro 4. But if you’re driving something that old, you’re probably looking to upgrade in any case, so why not do it now while prices are high and you’ll get the maximum amount for your old vehicle?
If you buy from Westwood, we’ll give you full market price for your old vehicle as a part exchange. If you rent from us, we’ll also happily pay the same market value straight into your account for your old vehicle, so either way, you get top money for your old vehicle and drive something that’ll save you money. So why wait?
How are Euro 6 Different To Older Vehicles?
The most notable difference you’ll pick up when driving a Euro 6 diesel is the addition of the Adblue system (technically Adblue is a trademarked name and the generic term is Diesel Exhaust Fluid) which you’ll have to keep topped up yourself. But the cost of that is well worth the benefits.
Because Euro 6 engines are more efficient than the old ones, so you get better fuel economy, meaning less cash poured into the pumps. Because numerous cities, not just London, are bringing in Clean air zones, or have done so already, running an older diesel will be getting pretty expensive no matter where you drive it!
Euro 6 engines are usually more powerful too, thanks to being newer and therefore benefitting from the relentless progress of technology.
If you buy or hire one of our vans you’ll avoid the ULEZ charge and you’ll avoid any drop in value that comes with an old engine.
Simply put, you’ll get a better vehicle and up paying less in the long run.
Take a look at our vans for sale, to see what we have available right now and drive away in one today. Alternatively, if you’d rather go down the van hire route (and change a depreciating asset into a deductible expense), then consider either Flexible van hire or contract van hire – the cheapest way to drive a brand new van!
Like it or not, the future of motoring is electric. While some vehicle users won’t be well served by making the switch, the vast majority of drivers, with a few minor changes to routine (charge when you can rather than waiting for ’empty’), electric vehicles make an awful lot of sense and currently electric cars and electric vans are both completely exempt from all known congestion and emissions charges. Conservatively, that’s around £600 a month you could save just by driving one inside the M25!
We’ve invested £Millions into the all electric side of our vehicle fleet, so naturally, if you’re looking to make the switch, we can help there too!
