We’ve Got The Power At Westwood Bolton
At Westwood, we’ve already been investing in our electric car and van hire fleet for years, so it was about time we made sure our Bolton Branch was equipped to deal with them. Today we’ve had a brand new Electric Vehicle Charger installed at our Bolton branch, courtesy of our friends at HLD Electrical.
Cast your mind back only a couple of years. An electric vehicle was fairly rare sight on the roads. Today however, they’re everywhere! Car charging infrastructure is catching up, but it’s been surprising (or maybe not) how fast people are adopting and adjusting to their electric cars and vans.
Our Wigan branch has had the facility to charge electric vehicles for some time and as of today, our Bolton Branch can too.
Which Electric Car Charger Did We Choose?
There are so many electric car chargers on the market today, for a whole range of prices. Most electric vehicles will come with a 3 pin plug based charger which can be plugged into any regular power outlet. These are ok to use in the absence of an alternative, but they’re exceptionally slow. An electric vehicle wallbox between 3kw and 6kw output is regarded as a ‘slow charger’ and is still up to three times faster than these backup charger!
Neil from HLD Electrical, also explained that the three pin domestic plug is not an ideal charging solution long term. It’ll do the job, but it’s not as safe or as convenient as a proper electric vehicle charger wallbox. He showed us some images of damaged and cracked domestic sockets which had been overloaded by overuse resulting in blown fuses etc.
Electric vehicle chargers known as ‘fast chargers’ start from speeds of 7kw up to around 22kw. A 7kw charger is typically the fastest charger that can be fitted on a domestic power supply and is generally perfectly suitable for houses with one or maybe two electric vehicles which will spend all nighr parked up charging.
Our Bolton branch today is benefitting from an electric vehicle charger capable of the maximum charging speed in the ‘fast charger’ classification, a speed which is up to 10 times faster than a domestic power socket and will allow most electric vehicles to achieve an 80% charge in just a few hours. As our needs grow, we can also, quickly and easily add additional units in a daisy chain, allowing multiple electric vehicles to be charged at once.
Our top end fast charger is only possible thanks to the three phase supply we have here at Bolton, thanks to our building being a proper commercial unit with power supply which goes beyond what would be possible for a non-commercial premises.
There are, of course, even more powerful charger groups, such as ‘rapid charger’ or even ‘super fast charger’, but those are more specialist units, usually found in banks or at filling stations, far beyond what we need here!

The Manchester Clean Air Zone has been delayed for the time being, but it’ll be here eventually. Not to mention every other congestipn/emissions charge popping up all around the country. Did you know that Electric Vehicles are exempt from EVERY KNOWN CHARGE?
Also, don’t forget that electric vehicles are currently subject to benefit in kind company car tax of only 1%?
You can get a grant for around £350 against the cost of installing an electric vehicle charger and once you have one, topping up your battery, mile for mile costs practically nothing compared to the cost of topping your petrol or diesel vehicle.
Spaces and chargers for electric cars and electric vans are popping up pretty much everywhere now. Frequently these spaces are reserved for EV’s only, they’re usually the best spaces in the car park and many of them are free to use. Top up while you shop!
