The 2024 Volvo XC40 is a terrific offering and a super popular choice for those who want to hire a car that’s well engineered, attractive and safe, but also want a change from the usual German go-to marques. Back in the day, Volvo was synonymous with the ‘Estate’ car and ‘Volvo Estate’ could amost have been hyphenated, however, as the trend for family cars moved more and more toward the jacked up offroad look, the popularity of the super practical longer car with a boxy back waned a little, to the point where Volvo (temporarily) abandoned the Estate bodystyle entirely.
Thankfully, the resurgence of the Estate has caused Volvo to re-think and perform a screeching u-turn, (they’re not even calling them ‘Touring’ or Shooting Brake’ like ‘certain’ others), however, where does this leave SUV’s like the Volvo XC40?
In short, the resurgence of Estates doesn’t equal fewer SUV’s, or at least not yet so this means more choice not less.
The Volvo XC40 is the smallest Scandi-SUV from Volvo, but it’s by no means a small car. It’s also a very good car, being the winner of multiple ‘car of the year’ awards from multiple sources, in fact it’s won the Whatcar Family Car of The Year award three separate times and as such, if you’ve never tried a Volvo before, you can be sure you’re not going to be taking a chance, it’s every bit as solid, reliable and plush as you’d expect from a premium brand.
Volvo has long ago shed the image of creating sort of squarish bricks on wheels, but it’s clear that safety remains very much at the heart of their ethos. Current models feature handsome, pleasing lines throughout and there are some very interesting little touches here and there which point to the designers seeking to understand and cater for the needs of the typical driver. Similarly the needs of the environmentally conscious are also well catered for in the use of more natural and sustainable materials.
The driving experience of the Volvo XC40 is also a balance between driving experience and comfort. Even with the largest alloys, imperfecions in the road aren’t going to jolt you out of your seat, but this is traded off a little against body roll. It’s expertly controlled though. Having said that, while the Volvo XC40 is perfectly capable of cornering at a rate of knotts, Volvo’s appeal more to the drivers who want their cars to be more ‘hygge’ than hair-raising. It’ll fly if you ask it to, but why ruin the calm relaxed experience?
